That’s the stuff Daddy is going to teach us
BY Mike Foti
In the heat of your business day, or at the end of it for that matter, do you
take time to reflect upon what you learned that day and on those things that you
have to be grateful for? If you're like the vast majority of the people you
don't do this and don't have the time for this type of exercise!
I think it is possible in business to get 10 years of experience in 1 year or 1
year of experience in 10 years depending upon how you go about playing the game.
To maximize our personal and professional growth and those of the people that we
influence in our lives I believe that we have to do two things:
-
Take the knowledge we have and apply it, thereby
converting it to wisdom
-
Take the wisdom we have and give it away to
others, thereby leaving our legacy.
I practice what I call the 5/3-rule everyday. In a
journal I write down each day the 5 things that I have to be grateful for that
day and the 3 lessons that I have learned. My son Grant, who is 4, has begun to
see me doing this and now when I ask him why I do this he says, "The stuff in
the book is what Daddy is going to teach us. These are the things he is learning
and things to be grateful for."
My belief is that if you reflect upon the lessons in your day (which comes out
of the good things and the bad things) you will learn quicker and not repeat the
same lessons over and over. Thereby allowing you to compress many years of
experience into one. Leaving these lessons in written form allows you not only
to reflect and share them with others but also allows a written legacy that you
can leave your family!
Reflecting on the five things you are grateful for gets your thoughts in a
"glass half full" mindset. To truly provide positive influence and impact on
others you need to be sharing your wisdom in with a positive attitude. I think
that the 5/3-journal program will help to build your wisdom muscle while
maintaining a helpful and encouraging attitude. The lesson to be learned is to
reflect on what you are learning and what you have to be grateful for because it
will not only help you learn and grow, but it can be used to help and encourage
others both now and in the future. If you would like to have Mike speak to your group consider the following
