Creating the Entrepreneurial Mind Set
BY Mike Foti
There is no such thing as an entrepreneurial company! Yes, you heard that right.
Only people who combine a vision for a better way with an action plan to make it
happen are entrepreneurial. The challenge in our organizations is to combine
“visionaries” with “do-ers” who are able to motivate others to contribute to a
worthwhile purpose. How might we do this?
-
“Begin with diversity in mind” – Mix
“left-brained” visionaries with “right-brained” doers to collaborate around an
issue, topic, problem or strategic plan. Look to include different ages,
genders, and races to broaden perspective.
-
Outrageous ideas are required! – We are
limited by what we already know. In the “idea stage” put forward ideas without
first thinking through their practicality. Combinations of various ideas
generally drive the best plans.
-
Name that vision in “X” words or less – Powerful
visions are big, simple to communicate, and provide a goal or purpose that
motivates people. Simplify the vision to the minimum number of words that are
possible.
-
Make a plan and don’t check it twice –
Look to develop a “good plan” that can be implemented vs. the “perfect plan”
that never gets off the drawing board.
-
Be an “accountable matchmaker” – Assign
people responsibilities to the plan that match their skills and interests and
identify benchmarks and time frames for completion. Launch into action, learn
as you go, and adjust “on the fly.”
-
Celebrate victories and move up the bar -
Celebrate achievements by spreading out the accolades freely and then move up
the bar to minimize complacency.
An entrepreneurial mind-set begins inside each one
of us. Successful entrepreneurial leaders will draw out and coalesce the ideas
of their people; unleash their talents on the plan; adjust the plan through
setbacks; celebrate the victories; and begin to raise the bar again.
